- Create an XML file.
- Go to File menu.
- Click “New…”
- Scroll down until you see “XML Document”. Select it and click “Create”
- You should now have a document called “Untitled.xml” or “Untitled1.xml” open in your Oxygen application. It will have the XML declaration in purple at the top of the file: . The XML declaration identifies the document as being an XML document.
- Note that the XML declaration has no closing tag.
- The question marks indicate that this particular line is a processing instruction: <? ?>. Oxygen helpfully colours processing instructions in purple for us.
- The XML specification is still in version 1.0. We put in the version number because some day there may be a new release of the XML specification, at which point we’ll want to know which XML specification a document follows.
- UTF is the Unicode Transformation Format. It tells the processor how to process all the characters in your document. UTF-8 is backwards-compatible with the ASCII character set (the first 128 characters in Unicode) and recognizes all the characters in Unicode.
- Add five Avengers to your file:
- Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow
- Your file should be malformed at this point. Test this hypothesis by clicking the arrow beside the green checkmark and selected “Check well-formedness”
- Wrap each Avenger in the <avenger> element. Your file should still be malformed at this point.
- Wrap your list in the root element <avengers>. Check well-formedness again. Is the file well-formed now?
- Now add the information about each avenger from the following chart. Make up human-readable elements and attributes as needed. You get to decide how to organize the parent and child elements, and you get to decide what information is best captured in the text node of an element and what is best captured via an attribute and value on an element.
